The game Palworld was developed at a very low cost
Recently, the CEO of Pocketpair Studio, the developer of Palworld game, discussed the production cost of this game and the team's future plans.
The video game industry has witnessed a state of disruption and tension lately, with thousands losing their jobs and game production costs soaring. Fortunately, there are still games being developed at low costs that are achieving amazing success.
One of the games that has attracted a lot of attention in 2024 is Palworld, developed by Pocketpair Studio, which managed to attract 25 million players in its first month of release. Takuro Mizube, the CEO of Pocketpair Studio, recently announced in an interview with Bloomberg that this game was produced at a cost of less than one billion yen, approximately equivalent to around 6.7 million dollars. However, he did not specify if this figure includes only development costs or marketing expenses as well.
For this cost, Palworld managed to generate tens of billions of yen. Mizube mentioned that expensive AAA games are not suitable for them, and Pocketpair Studio plans to continue focusing on producing smaller-scale games with lower production costs. This is logical considering the current state of the video game industry, where major studios producing popular games have recently had to lay off some of their employees.
For example, Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel's Spider-Man 2, which recently sold 10 million copies, was affected by a significant halt in work on PlayStation for a period and had to lay off some employees. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was produced at a cost of 315 million dollars. Similarly, Respawn Entertainment, the maker of successful titles like Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi, has had to downsize for some time and even canceled the development of an unannounced first-person shooter Star Wars project.
Interestingly, despite all this talk, Mizube states that Pocketpair Studios will consider merger or collaboration offers, although they are satisfied with remaining independent. Palworld game is now available on Xbox Series X, experienced on Xbox Series S and Xbox One, and PC, with the developer talking about bringing it to more platforms.
